Another Canadian VoIP Provider Goes Belly-Up

Today Link2Voip, a Canadian VoIP provider, announced via email to their customers, that they will be shutting down operations over the next 90 days (on May 30, 2012).  Link2VoIP is an Edmonton, Alberta based company in operation since 1993.  They cite as reasons for shutting down as " ballooning costs, the rapid increase of competitive services, and the current political climate surrounding the Internet".

I have been using Link2VoIP myself as a backup/stand-by VoIP service to my other two primary VoIP providers for a year or so.  About, 5 years ago, I was using another Canadian VoIP provider (Allo.com) who also went belly-up.  These occurrences just validate my practice and recommendations of always subscribing to at least two or 3 VoIP providers (there is nothing like having a backup, or two).

I find it quite interesting that Link2VoIP's announcement is almost coincidental to the launch of Dell Canada's new VoIP service (Dell Voice) earlier in February.  I guess this falls in line with them citing "rapid increase of competitive services" as a contributing factor.  Well, it is hard to compete with "free" phone calls across Canada as promoted by Dell Voice and Google Voice.
