Obi200 - How To Backup And Restore Configuration Settings Locally

Being able to backup and restore your OBi200 VoIP ATA configuration settings is an invaluable tool.
Performing a configuration backup or restore procedure is a strait forward and simple process on the OBi200.

So, I'll get right to it.

Note:
This article, and most all articles I write about the OBi200, are based on the premise that you prefer to "manually" and "locally" manage your OBi200.  Thus, this implies that you have not or are not allowing remote administration of the OBi200 via the www.obitalk.com administration portal.  If the OBi200 is registered on the OBiTalk network portal,  any settings you change locally and directly via your LAN connection, may not remain intact.

Performing A System Configuration Backup Procedure
  • Login to the OBi200 ATA.
  • Once logged-in, click on the System Management menu option.
  • Click on the Device Update menu option in the left-hand window pane.
  • Click on the Backup button located in the window section labeled "Backup Configuration".

  • This will open the File Save As window:
  • Navigate through your PC file directory until you find, or create, the place you want to store the current and future configuration settings for your OBi200 VoIP ATA.  (You will likely come back to here in the future to restore your settings, if needed).

The default file name of your backup will be:  backupxxxxxxxxxxxx.xml where xxxxxxxxxxxx will be the actual MAC address of your OBi200 ATA.

You may want to append or prepend the name of the backup file for greater clarity in the future for when you perform a restore.  Some people may want to have different versions of a configuration backup file for different purposes (multiple configuration schemes).  I know I will.
  • Once you have decided on a location and/or a name variation, click the Save button.
  • Once initiated, the file backup download only takes a few secnds to complete.
That's it.  We're done.  Now, at some point in the future when you feel the need to restore your backed-up configuration settings, you can do it using this backup file.

    Important Notes:
System backups do not backup any passwords or PIN's.  So, if you ever change your administrator password or PIN, and you forget your password or PIN, and you cannot log back into your ATA, your only recourse is to perform a Factory Reset Configuration procedure, which resets ALL changed values in your OBi200 back to factory default values, including administrator passwords, PINs, AND your SIP Proxy login passwords.

VoIP Service Configuration Passwords Do Not Get Backed-up
While configuration backups do save all other VoIP service provider settings, the OBi200 will not backup your service provider SIP registration password.  I presume this is for security reasons.

    Performing A Configuration Restore Procedure
For the purpose of illustration, I just performed a Reset Configuration to Defaults (Factory Restore) procedure on my OBi200.  This wipes clean any configurable settings I may have made to the ATA.

Next, I will restore my settings back to what they were before performing the Reset Configuration procedure.
    • Login to the OBi200 ATA.
    • Once logged-in, click on the System Management menu option.
    • Click on the Device Update menu option in the left-hand window pane.
    • Click on the Choose File button, located under the "Restore Configuration" section.

    • Navigate through your PC file directory menu until you find the location of where you saved your previous configuration backup files.
    • Select the file name you wish to restore to, and click on the Open button.

    • You are now ready to begin the restore process.

    • Click the Restore button, as illustrated above.
    • A pop-up dialog box will appear asking you to confirm your actions by clicking OK to continue, or Cancel to abort the procedure.
    • Once you click OK, the OBi200 will begin uploading the selected configuration file contents to its memory.....
    • After the data file has completed uploading, the "Restore is Successful" window will appear.

The initial uploading process duration will only take ~ 20 seconds.

You are now finished importing and restoring your backup configuration file.

Your OBi200 is now re-configured with the same settings as was previously set when you created the original backup file.

      Reminder:
Just another reminder that backup files do not contain any passwords saved in your OBi200 configuration settings.  Thus, you cannot restore forgotten passwords this way.

This also means that any SIP Proxy registration server Passwords previously configured into your OBi, will not be restored when you perform a restore procedure.  Therefore, once restored, you will need to reconfigure your SIP Proxy passwords again in order to have successful SIP service registration again.  This is obviously a security feature by design.

      P.S.
